本标准作为材料水环境暴露腐蚀试验的指导原则，对各种材料水环境腐蚀试验中的共性问题进行了规定，适用于各种材料在海水和淡水环境的腐蚀试验及结果评定。根据实际需要，可以在该通则下制定不同材料在不同水环境下腐蚀试验规程的具体细则。
